Salford tower blocks receive £2.2m heating upgrades
Over 500 residents living in five Salford tower blocks will benefit from heating system upgrades under a £2.2 million government-backed initiative. The funding, distributed through the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES), will upgrade communal heating at Nine Acre Court (Ordsall), Floral Court (Broughton), and three Trinity towers: Black Friar Court, Newbank Tower, and Riverbank Tower.
Upgrades will target plant rooms, pipework, and insulation, alongside the replacement of heat interface units and meters in individual homes. These changes are designed to minimize energy waste, reduce carbon emissions, and lower residents’ bills by enhancing overall system efficiency.
Salix Homes, which oversees more than 8,000 properties in Salford, including 21 tower blocks, already secured £1.2 million earlier this year for improvements at three Pendleton towers: Magnolia Court, Sycamore Court, and Mulberry Court. When combined with the latest funding, the total investment reaches £3.5 million, covering eight of the ten blocks with communal gas heating.

David Malsom, Salix Homes’ sustainability manager, described the new funding as excellent news for residents. He stated the upgrades would refresh outdated systems, enhance reliability, and support the association’s broader efficiency targets. Salix Homes expects work to begin next year.
A separate £25,000 grant will fund an assessment study at Canon Hussey Court (Islington) to evaluate potential future upgrades and aid further funding applications.
Martin McCluskey, the minister for local energy and jobs, positioned the investments as part of a broader effort to provide affordable, dependable heating while generating employment and strengthening energy security. He highlighted that the improvements would directly assist families already dependent on heat networks.
