A North East sports travel company is expanding its digital capabilities and global reach after securing a six-figure investment from a regional fund. Nirvana Europe, based in Wallsend, has received backing from NPIF II – NEL Debt Finance, part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II, to accelerate its transformation into a more technology-driven, data-focused business.

The company, founded in 1999 as the official travel and accommodation partner for the Great North Run, now specializes in event logistics for endurance sports worldwide.

Its services include bespoke travel packages, accommodation arrangements, and operational support for events like IRONMAN races, triathlons, and other major sporting competitions. Over the past decade, its annual event portfolio has grown from 70 to 180, with customers now served across 120 countries.

The new funding will support the development of a next-generation sales and booking platform, enhance marketing and data analytics, and expand the team to pursue additional partnerships. Nirvana’s managing director, Nigel Morris, said the investment would allow the firm to operate more efficiently, leverage data more effectively, and improve customer experiences. He noted that the fund’s team had taken the time to understand Nirvana’s long-term goals, providing a strong foundation for growth.

This is the second round of investment from NEL Fund Managers, which first backed Nirvana in 2024 to support its expansion into North America. That market has since become a significant revenue driver. Jane Siddle, a senior investment executive at NEL, described the firm as a leader in its niche, citing its long-standing partnerships with organisations like British Triathlon and USA Triathlon. She emphasized that the company’s disciplined approach to growth, balancing scale with operational strength, would ensure sustainable expansion.

The £660 million NPIF II fund, managed by the British Business Bank, provides loans and equity investments to small and medium-sized businesses in the region. Nirvana’s funding falls within the fund’s range of £25,000 to £2 million in loans and up to £5 million in equity. Sarah Newbould, a senior investment manager at the bank, highlighted how Nirvana’s growth reflects the potential of North East businesses to scale internationally while investing in technology and talent.

NEL Fund Managers also oversees the NPIF II, NEL Smaller Loans programme, which offers investments between £25,000 and £100,000 to support emerging and established businesses in the region. The fund’s focus on technology and operational improvements aligns with the firm’s strategy to modernise its infrastructure and better serve its global client base.
